Art Studio

Our Specialist Art Studio

At Colmers Farm Primary School, we are very proud of our art studio and the teaching and learning that takes place within this space. We have a specialist art teacher (Mrs Oliver) who leads all of the art and design and technology lessons which take place within this, along with weekly parental workshops for our reception children and their parents.

Few primary schools have such a dedicated facility for art and design and technology. We believe that our pupils develop a range of experiences, skills, knowledge and qualities through using regularly using this space and from being taught by our specialist teacher.

The Origins of Our Art Studio

In the Autumn Term of 2019/2020, Excelsior MAT launched an innovation competition amongst the schools within the MAT. To win this competition, a school had to come up with an idea and to pitch it to a Dragons Den style of panellists. As a school we really wanted to enhance teaching and learning within art and design and technology as we felt that there were a lot of advantages to this. We also felt that regular lessons in this could be used to enhance our PPA provision within school. We therefore pitched for a brand-new art studio and a specialist art and design teacher to teach these lessons.

And… We won!

Why an Art Studio and Specialist Teacher?

“Art transforms lives as well as being a vital part of our economy. It is incredible to see how it can change a child, Unlocking their talent, building resilience, confidence and communication skills. These are skills needed for any job. The arts need to be integrated into the [school] curriculum, not just seen as a nice thing to do.”

Andria Zafirakou, 2018 Varkey Foundation Global Prize Winner and Art and Textiles Teacher, Alperton community School, The Times, 3 April 2018.
