If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.

OPAL

OPAL at Colmers Farm Primary School

What is OPAL?

OPAL stands for Outdoor Play and Learning, a nationally recognized programme designed to improve the quality of play for all children. At Colmers Farm Primary School, we believe that play is an essential part of children’s physical, emotional, social and academic development. Through OPAL, we are transforming our playtimes into rich, inclusive and exciting opportunities for learning and fun.

Why Colmers Farm chose OPAL.

Play is not just a break from learning — it is learning. Our commitment to OPAL comes from the understanding that high-quality play:

  • Enhances creativity and imagination;
  • Builds resilience and confidence;
  • Encourages teamwork and cooperation;
  • Promotes health and well-being.

By joining the OPAL programme, we’re working toward a long-term cultural change in the way children play at school.

What does play look like at Colmers Farm?

Thanks to OPAL, playtimes at Colmers Farm are vibrant and varied. Our pupils can now enjoy:

Loose parts play (tyres, crates, ropes, pipes)

Den building

⚽   Active sports and free play

Creative areas for art and imaginative play

Mud café and sandpit

Inventive spaces built with reclaimed and recycled materials

Every child can find something they love. Our playground is a space where everyone belongs, learns, and thrives.

Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is important because it protects every child’s right to rest, play, and take part in cultural and artistic activities. These experiences are essential for healthy development, helping children grow physically, emotionally, and socially. Play and creativity allow children to express themselves, build confidence, and connect with others. This article also promotes equal access for all children, regardless of background or ability, and protects them from being overworked. By upholding this right, societies support the overall well-being and happiness of children.

Safety and Inclusion

Our OPAL approach is fully risk-assessed and led by trained staff. We teach children how to manage risks responsibly, giving them freedom within safe boundaries. OPAL play is inclusive by design — ensuring that every child, regardless of age, ability, or background, can participate meaningfully.
